Dentist/Orofacial Myologist

Achieve Dental and Sleep Wellness

Our research highlights the significance of addressing sleep-related concerns, like mouth breathing and obstructive sleep apnea, in children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD, ADHD, and specific learning disorders.

For your dental needs, you have the option to consult a Holistic Dentist, who takes a comprehensive approach to oral health by considering its impact on the overall wellbeing of the body. Alternatively, an Orofacial Myologist specialises in treating oral habits, speech difficulties, and facial muscle patterns.

Why Choose a Holistic Dentist?

By visiting a holistic dentist they take a comprehensive approach recognising the interconnections between oral health, sleep quality, and neurodevelopmental disorders. They can help identify and address potential sleep issues which may be impacting or causing their symptomatology.

The Importance of Ruling Out Sleep Issues

Quality Sleep

Quality sleep is essential for optimal brain development, cognitive functioning, and emotional wellbeing.

Neurodevelopmental disorders can often be associated with sleep issues such as insomnia, restless sleep, sleep apnea, or inadequate sleep quality. Identifying and addressing these sleep concerns can positively impact your child’s behaviour, attention, and overall functioning.

Mouth Breathing

Chronic mouth breathing, often due to nasal congestion or structural issues, can affect your child’s facial growth, oral health, and overall development. It can lead to improper tongue posture, altered facial structure, dental malocclusions, and impaired breathing during sleep.

Addressing mouth breathing is crucial for  proper nasal breathing, which is essential for oxygenation of the brain.

Oral Health

Maintaining good oral health is essential for overall health and wellbeing. Poor oral hygiene, tooth decay, and gum disease can lead to chronic inflammation, which may contribute to systemic inflammation and potentially worsen symptoms in neurodevelopmental disorders.

By focusing on comprehensive oral care, they aim to support your child’s overall health.

What to Expect on Your First Visit:

Comprehensive Assessment

The holistic dentists below perform a thorough evaluation of your child’s oral health, including assessing dental development, occlusion, and signs of mouth breathing. They also examine potential airway issues and evaluate sleep-related concerns to identify any underlying sleep disorders.

Individualised Treatment

Based on their assessment findings, they create personalised treatment plans tailored to your child’s specific needs. This may include interventions to improve nasal breathing, correct oral habits, optimise oral hygiene, and support healthy sleep patterns.

“Unless you watch your child sleep at night, you will not know if any of their symptoms are caused by any sleep issues. You could either get a sleep study done or intermittently look at your child when they are sleeping for ten minutes at a time. You are looking for symptoms of restless legs, turning continuously, snoring, breathing difficulties, arched neck and head, open mouth or a combination of these. There can be many underlying causes of neurodevelopmental disorders, however its important to rule out sleep problems and get this addressed as part of their treatment plan.”

Breathing is the key that unlocks the entire catalog of advanced biological function and development. Not only is it the first action of life, but it’s also the most important. Our very existence depends on it.
